When we got to the restaurant, they ushered us to the table. God, we were the last ones to arrive. That made me a little nervous to know that we were late. Once we’d gotten to the table, an older Hispanic man and Smoke stood to their feet as Lark squeezed my hand. He could feel my nerves I was sure. I glanced over at Amiko, and she looked extremely comfortable. But again, she never had a problem with people liking her.

Lark began, “Pops, Mommy, this is Fawn Patterson. Fawn, these are my parents, Pilar and Manuel.”

They grinned at me for a moment, really making me ice up. Suddenly his mama hopped up from her seat with a huge smile on her face. “Mijo! She is beautiful! Fawn, eres guapisima!”

Her deep dimples were showing. This is where they got their blackness from. She looked to be biracial. “Mommy, English. She doesn’t speak Spanish,” Lark said as she put her hand to her face.

She said something else in Spanish. I was so damned uncomfortable, because I didn’t know what the hell they were saying. Everyone was laughing except me and Amiko, but Miko did have a bright smile on her face. She spoke Spanish though, so she knew what they were saying. Lark questioned how much his mom had to drink, as his mom said, “Don’t listen to them, Fawn. They wanna make me sound all lushy. I apologize, sweetheart. I’m so used to flipping back and forth between English and Spanish with these three, on top of keeping up with their slang and shit. Lark, you teach her Spanish.”

I smiled at her, trying to relax. She hugged me, then held me by my shoulders at arm’s length. “Manuel, doesn’t she look like Elaine?”

He nodded as he smiled at her. Elaine was the woman that gave me life, that I never had the chance of meeting. “She does. It’s so nice to meet you, Fawn. Your parents were some of my best friends.” Aww shit. Please, let’s not go there. “But I won’t get into that, because I know the loss you’ve experienced recently.” Thank God. “I’m so happy to see you all grown up. You and my son look great together, and I can tell he loves you. So, welcome to our family.”

“Thank you. It’s nice to meet the both of you.”

He opened his arms and stepped closer to me, so I met him halfway and hugged him. Lark pulled my chair out, and I sat as I glanced around the table. A crowbar couldn’t pry words from my lips. When he sat, he leaned into me and whispered, “See, I told you. You ain’t have no worries. Well, the only worry you got now is how much of this dick you gon’ take on the way to the house.”

The heat rushed to my face, and I knew it had to be red. I even stopped breathing. It felt like I was gonna piss on myself as he laughed. I fidgeted in my seat and adjusted my dress.
